Cañada Fashion Department

I moved back to California from New York City back in early 2011.  I had worked in retail for several years but I wanted to advance my career in corporate level merchandising.  At the time I knew little about the industry but I was very eager to learn.  I enrolled in Cañada College's Fashion Department and graduated with my AS Degree in Fashion Merchandising in 2013.

I met a lot of great people during my time at Cañada, both teachers and fellow students.  I am often in touch with many of my classmates as we all find our way through this industry.

Cañada recently interviewed me for their blog, check out my feature here!

One of my favorite classes at Cañada was Fashion Show Production.  The class puts on an annual fashion show every May and I had the pleasure of modeling a few times.  The outfits are made from recycled materials and are very avant garde! Check out some of my favorite snap shots from years past:

Why I Walk

My good friends Alicia Luchetti and Teresa Lasaga are walking in the Avon 39 Walk to End Breast Cancer.  Along with many others, this cause is personal because both ladies have lost family members to breast cancer.

Please read below stories and support these ladies as they raise money for a great cause.  They have committed to raising a total of $3,600 which helps fund research, awareness, and education while providing assistance for families currently battling breast cancer.

You can donate to team Sanderson Sisters here!

Alicia:

I walk for my grandmother, who lost the battle with breast cancer in 2002. She grew up as a poor child working the cotton fields of Yazoo City, Mississippi. Sometimes she ate dirt just to feel full. Yet she never let her circumstances affect her spirit. She became a dedicated member of her community, a wonderful wife, an even better mother of 4 and the best grandmother of 3. She taught me to never give up, to reach for the stars and to always strive to achieve my best. After two separate battles with breast cancer, the last of which spread to her liver and bones, she left this world to join her husband in February 2002. I walk to remind myself that I was born from a line of strong women, and I walk to help end the battle with breast cancer that so many strong women face each day.

Teresa:

I want to do the Avon Walk because breast cancer really effects most families.  My aunt passed away a few years ago from breast cancer and my mom had a scare last year.  I think it's great when thousands of people come together to help end the battle.  Together we can help save lives by promoting awareness and raising funds for research.

It is also very personal for me, my grandmother was a breast cancer survivor after loosing her mother to breast cancer at a very young age.

Please do what you can to help the cause. Any little bit helps!  Thank you for your support :)

Let's get Crafty!

I am a DIY enthusiast, I absolutely love getting down and dirty in art projects.  I'm obsessed with everything from textile arts to handmade dreamcatchers.

One of my favorite discoveries in Austin is the open artists studio Craft.  This place is every crafter's paradise with open studio space and an endless supply of art materials at your disposal.  Owner Elisabeth has created a unique space that will send your imagination soaring with project ideas.  Her concept is brilliant, you can come to her studio, use her supplies, make a mess and go home with your beautiful creation.  I was even so lucky that she made me the best french toast I've ever tasted!

Most recently I've been on a letterpress and stamping kick, so much that I have an entire previous post dedicated to it.  At Craft I got to take my obsession to the next level and Elisabeth taught me how to use embossing to letterpress cards.

If you are ever in the Austin area and are looking to nurture your inner artist, I highly recommend Craft.  You can also bring your friends and do fun group events!

A Gardener's Mecca

As you can tell from my previous post, I am a sucker for beautiful gardens!  My sister has recently taken up the hobby of gardening and she discovered this great nursery outside the city of Austin.

The Natural Gardener self describes itself as "A Gardener's Mecca" and I couldn't agree more!  Even if you're not in the market for gardening gear, it is so much fun just to wander through the acres of this world class nursery.  The abundance of sunshine and greenery will most certainly lift anyone's mood.  You may even make a donkey or a goat friend!

If you're looking for some modern outdoor furnishings, you'll love perusing through their colorful collection of patio furniture and decor.  Browse the gift shop for some terrariums, hanging air plants and adorable ceramics to brighten your digs.

If you're ever fortunate enough to be in the Austin area, pay a visit to this garden of Eden and support local small business!

Zilker Botanical Garden

Tucked away in Austin you'll find the most calming and tranquil escape.  The Zilker Botanical Garden is a hidden gem inside Barton Springs Park.  The garden spans 26 acres and welcomes over 300,000 annual visitors through it's gorgeous gardens.

As you adventure through the trails, you'll come across a variety of different habitats from a lush Butterfly Garden to a dry dessert Cactus and Succulent Garden.  Step into Jurassic Park as you explore the Tropical Prehistoric Garden where dinosaur remains have been found.  The Japanese Tea Garden induces instant serenity as you observe the koi splash around in their pond.  As you look up, blue jays jump around between tree branches and below butterflies flutter about amidst the flowers.

Take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city and ogle at all the natural beauty.  And don't forget to have an impromptu disco party among the trees with the giant disco ball hanging from the branches!
